Humidor cigar boxes are designed to store cigars in optimum moisture range of 68% to 72%. This moisture level can be achieved, while the humidifier is at room temperature. A humidor should contain a humidification system or device to add (or remove) the humidity of the interior space to maintain the desired humidity. A humidor cigar box typically contains a hygrometer to measure the humidity inside the box. Most cigar humidor boxes are made of wood, the interior usually built with Spanish cedar.

After purchase (or dry for an extended period) your humidor should be experienced. To begin, clean the interior with a damp cloth to remove all dust. Some experts suggest that the cedar interior clean your humidifier with water is not best practice, but many people still do to try to season your humidor faster. After that, leave a small container in the humidor and close the lid for approximately 12 hours. If you find that most (or all) of the water has been absorbed, repeat this process for 24 hours. Once the water has ceased to evaporation, it can start storing your cigars in the humidor. The humidifying element to keep the moisture in the wood, which in turn keeps the moisture in the cigars. The use of distilled water is recommended as it contains less minerals, additives, or bacteria from the tap or bottled finished water.
