Cigar Bars to the Rescue

When in the 1990′s, the premium cigar industry rebounded after years of stale sales figures and slackening consumer interest, it faced a new social climate. More and more municipalities and states had passed laws against snuff throughout the eighties, and that trend continued during the 1990 and beyond. All this means that many of those new smokers found themselves unable to enjoy his new penchant for fancy restaurant food, film, in bars, or sometimes (as in the case of the new laws, smoking ultra British restrictive) anywhere outdoors all.

Fortunately for smokers, cigar bars sprung up around the country as a way to offer smokers the chance to enjoy the rich flavor of smoke in the company of people with similar interests. Many new anti-smoking laws make exceptions for establishments that cater directly to smokers – although often in such cases, the establishments that permit smoking must also install air filtration systems and various other devices to ensure the purity of Air Max (for inside) and minimum loss (for non-smokers outside). Therefore, cigar bars represent an important site for the new generation of smokers. Often it is the only place in town where you can love a person to share a cigar related, social atmosphere. So it’s no wonder that cigar bars, like cigar shops, clubs, and even magazines, became an important part of the new cigar culture that blossomed during the 1990s.

The range of services varies with the bar. Some high-end bars offer for-rent humidor lockers – such as Club Macanudo in New York – or books for sale, such as the bar of two bookstores in New York (the Hudson and at Lexington). Azucar Cigar Lounge in Corona, California, are plasma televisions television and cabinet humidors. Many bars double as, in effect, the high-level sports bars, but they are classy places in which to sit in leather furniture to see the Knicks game.

Other cigar bars offer the same amenities and entertainment options as other bars. Burbank Bar and Grill in Burbank, California – the same “beautiful downtown Burbank” from which broadcasts television shows for the 60 lot – has his own band, and a cigar bar in Glendale, California, has free appetizers. In smoking (the Spanish word for “smoke”) in Reno, Nevada, users playing poker, looking at books, and watch sports on flat screen TV. And Shelly Back Room in Washington, DC, with its location near the heart of the nation’s governmental processes, offers an opportunity to eavesdrop on the corridors of power.

Other bars are actually cigar stores with substantial added in the rooms – like the coffee roasting foundries where coffee is served, or breweries that offer excellent bars. For example, in snuff shop in Hartford, Connecticut, you will find some hard to find smoke and pipe products. Signature Cigars in Rockville, Maryland, offers free coffee to smoking customers.

These establishments are traditionally dominated by men, according to stereotypes, but as with many facts, once well established about smoking, snuff, it has undergone some revision in the years since the cigar boom in the mid 1990. Premium stogie makers noticed an increase in the number of women cigar smokers in that period, and stars like Jennifer Garner and Demi Moore trumpeted their love of cigars on the cover of magazines such as Cigar Aficionado. In this new climate, it is no surprise to find women frequenting cigar bars as well. Photographer Danuta Otfinowski offers on its website, a photo essay dedicated to women who frequent cigar bars in New York. She writes, “Cigars have been a symbol of male power smoke for many years, but the post-feminist 90′s are witnessing the revival of smoking among men and women.”

With cigars not continue to enjoy steady growth in popularity, and restrictive laws against smoking, apparently about to go anywhere, the importance of cigar bars will likely continue to grow. But there is nothing new about that – the snuff had a social dimension for almost as long as it has been smoked. Smoking in ancient tribal societies, after all, often a social activity, celebration, and cigar bars recover some of that old maybe camaraderie.
